Dear Partners in Prayer,
The psalmist wrote,
"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help
in trouble" (Psalms 46:1). God is our
hiding place and the source of our strength at all
times, but it is more obvious in times of trouble.
He is right there with us and ready to help as we
call on Him. The time since we last wrote has been a
mixture of blessings and trials.
The
strategic planning meetings for the radio ministry
in the Cusco went very well. Rev. VW Peters and Rev.
Steve Fulks met with Bruce in the mornings and with
the other men of the BMM Cusco team in the
afternoons. The final afternoon session included
members of the junta directiva, or board of
directors of the radio ministry. The results of the
sessions were a lot of good ideas about how to make
the ministry better. Some of these ideas still need
to be approved by the board of directors. Hopefully,
this will occur by the end of this month. We
certainly appreciate these men for coming and for
their efforts here and for your prayers as we met.
We are encouraged as we look at the future!
The new AM transmitter is having problems. Bruce
investigated late last week and early this week. He
discovered that a couple of parts had burned and
were destroyed. It appears that there is a
short-circuit inside the transmitter. Bruce plans to
get this fixed early this next week as there is an
inspection coming for the AM. Pray for the Lord to
give him wisdom as he continues troubleshooting and
repairing the transmitter and that the inspection
goes well.
Bruce was involved in a minor
traffic mishap last Monday night. He had been
working at the transmitter site with the AM
transmitter and in Urubamba sorting equipment and
seeking to find replacement parts to fix the
transmitter and had returned to our apartment in
Cusco. He went to a drugstore to get Debbie some
cough medicine. While he was driving back home, he
saw some people crossing the street about 50 yards
or so in front of him. He honked the horn (the most
common way of letting drivers and pedestrians know
of your presence in Peru; it's not considered rude
to honk) to let them know he was there. Two of the
people made it across the street, but Bruce hit the
third person. The police investigation determined
that the third person was under the influence of
alcohol and determined to be the one at fault. We
praise the Lord that we could see His hand in this
whole situation. We also praise the Lord that the
policemen were very helpful to Bruce. Thankfully,
the person received only minor injuries and the
Terrano received only minor damage. We looked to the
Lord as we went through this situation and He
provided opportunities for Bruce to share about the
Lord to the injured person, Joseph, and to the
investigating policeman, Officer Victor. Bruce also
invited them to church. Please pray that Bruce will
have continued opportunities with them.
You
may remember we mentioned last month that Bruce had
meetings with Pastor Percy and Pastor Beto about the
new church plant. April was very busy for Pastor
Percy and Calvary Baptist Church, where we attend,
with Resurrection Sunday early in the month, a
missionary "school" with several days of sessions
with the president and missionaries of the Peruvian
Independent Baptist Evangelical Mission visiting at
the church the middle of the month and the church's
anniversary (35th year) the last weekend of April.
Pastor Percy, Pastor Beto and Bruce are planning on
having monthly meetings to pray and to plan. The
church is planning on officially commissioning
Pastor Beto as its missionary in July.
Please
pray for Debbie as she has an opportunity June 9 for
ministry with the women at New Life Baptist Church
in Urubamba. She will be showing them how to make
greeting cards to encourage others. The theme for
the meeting is "Encouraging One Another in the
Lord." Pray that she will be an encouragement to the
ladies.
Last Saturday night, Joshua was on
his way to the young people's meeting at church. He
was waiting at the bus stop in front of the Andean
University. He saw Alexander, a friend from school
who recognized him and they started talking. When
Josh got on the bus, Alexander got on the same one
and decided to attend the youth meeting, too. He
seemed interested in continuing to attend. He
doesn't normally go to church. Pray for the Lord to
work in his life.
Bruce's Aunt Sue continues
to do well. She has another chemotherapy treatment
later this month. Thanks for continuing to prayer
for her.
Thanks for your faithful ministry of
prayer. It's great to see God's answers and we are
excited to be able to share them with you!
Sincerely in Christ, Bruce, Debbie, Joshua,
Josiah, and Jonathan Maddux 2
